Accountants learn 'golden tongue' techniques

A series of 'live' telesales calls will be used on training courses arranged for accountants, who are now able to take advantage of the liberalization of rules surrounding the way they can promote their business through cold calling. The first session is sold out.

The courses are aimed at giving accountants greater confidence to make outgoing calls professionally, the ability to get through to the right person, and how to handle leads and follow-up issues.

Staff from Blackbird based PM&M Accountants took part in a pilot for the new course. They say it helped them set clear objectives for each telesales conversation and underlined the need for a thorough understanding of the products they're selling. They gave the course a big thumbs up.

Promotion remains a sensitive area for the profession. Each of the courses will be addressed by a representative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICIER), who will reflect on the Guide to Professional Ethics.

Accountants on the course will get advice on targeting, clarifying objectives, preparing contact lists and using a prospect system. They'll then get the opportunity to watch their tutor make 'live' calls to prospects. After this they'll then be given close supervision as they themselves make 'live' calls to prospects.

"Those attending the course will be prepared for, and coached in, a technique which can make a serious impact on their business development," explains course director Marc Holland from PTP Training Ltd. "I want the accountants to come across on their calls as professionals with real integrity; as people who can extend their reputation to a wider audience by using this important tool."

ENDS Note to Editors The course 'Generating New Business By Telephone for Accountants' is a one-day seminar being held at Milton Keynes on 9 April (sold out), 15 May and 25th September. The day will run from 9.30am to 16.30pm. The sessions will commence with a seminar 'Guideline Changes' by an ethics adviser with the ICAEW.
